Alibaba may launch its own Amazon Echo rival in China

03 July 2017 3

Voice-activated smart home speakers are on a rise and are currently entering various markets worldwide. Speakers such as Amazon Echo and Google Home are a couple of dominant products in the market right now. However, these American company products have always proved difficult to enter Asian markets such as China. This is where the Chinese technology companies step in. Alibaba, who is also called as the ‘Amazon of China’ is now reportedly working on a product that will rival the Amazon Echo.

According to a source, the official announcement of this new Alibaba product is expected to be made as soon as next week. The product is also reported to be an exclusive one for the Chinese market. The Chinese speaking assistant will understand voice commands just like the Amazon Echo and even allow users to purchase products directly via the speaker. Alibaba’s CEO Jack Ma, who has brought the small business to such a huge ecosystem, told American firms to be “careful, not afraid.”

Although Alibaba has a strong hold in the Chinese market, they do have a couple fierce rivals as well. Rival firm JD.com also has a device called ‘DingDong,’ a speaker which was launched two years ago. Huawei also has been reported to be looking to Apple’s Siri for its own inspiration of a digital assistant. As of now, there is no word on the availability and cost of the Alibaba’s speaker, but stay tuned as we’ll let you know as soon as the product launches.
